“I will start Monday.” The words I hear so many times from people who claim they are committing to changing their health habits. Why Monday? Why not right now? I get it, Monday is the beginning of a new week and a fresh start. In my opinion, everyday is a new and fresh start. People tend to over think and over complicate what it means to change their health habits for the better. They think they need to do a complete overhaul of their kitchen. They believe they need to start exercising 5 times a week when they weren’t exercising at all beforehand. They cut out all processed foods at once. They spend 5+ hours on a Sunday meal prepping. You know where this usually gets people? It will get them some immediate results because they are eating better and moving more but, they are going to burn themselves out rather quickly and fall back into old habits. A healthy lifestyle can definitely be difficult for a lot of people when they change too many things too quickly.
When I work with nutrition clients it is my goal to teach them habits that they will be able to sustain for the rest of their lives. We work together to pin point struggle areas and then slowly work on them until they are confident enough and consist in themselves that they are ready to move on to the next thing. Instead of demanding a client to stop drinking soda, I suggest they cut out a can or two a week depending on how often they are consuming it. I might ask a client to prepare fresh veggies for the week for when they have a hard time having quick convenient options on hand instead of telling them they need to prep every single meal for the week. I know what you are thinking, “Results will take so much longer doing it this way.” That can’t be further from the truth. When making small consistent changes people are able to become confident and consistent in their ability to keep going. They will be able to make continuous progress and able to do these habits even when things get tough. They will have a healthy habit they learned to always fall back on when they get stuck instead of fully falling off the bandwagon.
So, don’t wait until Monday to start changing your health habits because you can start making small changes today that will last a lifetime. It is never too early or too late to start working towards the healthiest you.
