Happy Monday to you all and let’s kick this Monday off right! With a healthy cocktail recipe of course because how else should a week be started? Sadly, summer is slowly slipping through our fingers and soon fall will be here. Summer is ending, school will be starting soon and the temperatures will slowly fade. This also might mean that everyone is trying to fit in last minute cookouts, hangouts with friends and patio happy hours.
I encourage any and all cookouts, hangouts and patio happy hours, but those drinks can add up quickly and before you know it you’ve gained an extra 5-10lbs over the summer months as a result. I’m no advocate for over consumption of alcohol, but I am not going to sit here and tell you to never have drink. If you are looking to lose weight, lower your body fat or look better physically, I highly encourage you to look at your alcohol consumption. Consuming alcohol is consuming sugar which makes you want even more sugar which is when your brain becomes fogged and it’s easier to make unhealthy food choices.
Unless you want to compete at an elite level in a sport or step on stage in a body building contest, alcohol can still be integrated into your healthy lifestyle. Here are some of my recommendations on how to have your cocktail and drink it too. See what I did there?
- Set a limit for yourself. If you know you are meeting friends for happy hour, give yourself a limit of 1-2 drinks and then head home for a healthy meal.
- Make your own cocktails. Cocktails can be loaded and I mean loaded with artificial sugars (along with a ton of other junk) so why not know exactly what you are drinking and make your own? If you need some more healthy cocktail inspiration check out this post.
- If you will be at an all day event or you know your 1-2 drink limit just isn’t an option, drink a big glass of water between each drink. This will help hydrate you and fill you up and you will drink slower.
- Get back on track. Because it happens to the best of us, when you over do it and wake up with a killer hangover, get back on track with a healthy meal and drink a ton of water.
This cocktail recipe would be perfect for a girls hangout, day at the beach or to take along to a cookout. Double the recipe and share with friends and they too will see how delicious healthier cocktails can be!
