Who doesn’t love a good holiday cocktail!? Crazy people, that’s who. This recipe can be made one of two ways. You can be lazy like me and buy apple cider or you can make my Paleo Crockpot Apple Cider and let it cool. With the homemade apple cider you have a lot more beverage options. You can serve it as is, you can add vodka to it for a warm cocktail, or you can use it for these moscow mules. Dang, now I wish I would have made it! A nice warm glass of apple cider sounds just perfect right about now.
For our Thanksgiving dinner this year I am bringing Cranberry Sauce and Garlic Herb Mashed Baby Reds. I will be making the mashed potatoes with dairy free yogurt because all of a sudden my body doesn’t like Greek Yogurt. I just love a good mashed potato. We will also be having turkey, Whipped Kabocha Squash, paleo stuffing, a broccoli and cauliflower salad and Apple Crisp for dessert. And now my mouth is watering…
Thanksgiving can be a stressful day for those trying to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. My advice? Don’t stress! You didn’t get fat from one Thanksgiving day and you didn’t get skinny from one day of eating salads. Let yourself enjoy your family, cocktails, all the yummy eats and desserts. Be mindful of portion sizes, eat slowly and aim to not eat until you are overly full. If these things don’t happen and you eat until you have to unbutton your pants, that is okay! On Friday, get right back on track with healthy choices, eating slowly and eating until satisfied.
Here are a few more helpful tips to have your turkey and eat it too!
- Sweat – even if it is just for 10 minutes. Get in some sort of workout Thanksgiving Day. Here are a bunch of at home workouts.
- Be mindful of how much you are eating – try to avoid the Thanksgiving food comma. Start by eating the healthiest foods first: protein (turkey or ham or anything else you may have), then move to the vegetables, then the potatoes, rolls and save the dessert for last. This way you will be able to fill up on the healthy options and eat less of the not so healthy options.
- Drink a lot of water – this will fill your stomach some and keep your hunger at bay.
- Save the best for last – save your favorite dish or dessert for last – this will satisfy your pleasure signals and since you already filled up on turkey and vegetables, you won’t eat as much of it.
- Get right back on track the next day – get back to your healthy eating habits and workout routine the very next day.
Cheers to a happy happy Thanksgiving! Eat lots of great food, enjoy your time with your loved ones and have a grateful heart!
