Turkey Day is almost here and our menu is all set to go. These Garlic Herb Mashed Baby Red Potatoes are on the menu along with whipped sweet potatoes, some delish green beans in a sesame dressing, brussel sprout salad, paleo stuffing and of course turkey.
I tend to treat holidays like any other day of the week; I eat foods that I know work with my body, drink tons of water and get in a sweat session. Between the two Thanksgiving meals I get to go to I know there will be delicious and tempting foods and desserts that won’t settle well with me. So, I choose not to eat those foods. I would much rather skip out on the sugar, gluten and dairy and feel good than eat those things for a 10 second pleasure high and have a stomachache the rest of the day. If you don’t have food sensitives and you eat healthy on a regular basis, by all means indulge a bit! Thanksgiving is not a day to be strict, count your macros or feel guilty for what you choose to eat. It is a day to be thankful and celebrate all the good we have in our lives. But, I do have a few tips to make this the best Thanksgiving yet!
My Thanksgiving Day Advice:
- Sweat – even if it is just for 10 minutes. Get in some sort of workout Thanksgiving Day.
- Be mindful of how much you are eating – try to avoid the Thanksgiving food comma. Start by eating the healthiest foods first: protein (turkey or ham or anything else you may have), then move to the vegetables, then the potatoes, rolls and save the dessert for last. This way you will be able to fill up on the healthy options and eat less of the not so healthy options.
- Drink a lot of water – this will fill your stomach some and keep your hunger at bay.
- Save the best for last – save your favorite dish or dessert for last – this will satisfy your pleasure signals and since you already filled up on turkey and vegetables, you won’t eat as much of it.
- Get right back on track the next day – get back to your healthy eating habits and workout routine the very next day.
Just by following those simple steps above you can have a happy and delicious Thanksgiving without any guilt or thought of “needing to burn it off”. Enjoy the day, enjoy the food and be thankful you have your health and opportunity to make this the best Thanksgiving yet!
