It’s that time of year again when everyone’s buzzing about what their New Year’s resolutions are going to be and gearing up to jump on the diet train once the holidays are over to get rid of the holiday fluff. It has been normalized that once January rolls around we set resolutions. Studies have shown that 55 percent of resolutions are health related. Studies have also shown that by the time February hits most of us have abandoned our resolutions and the positive changes we have made that we were so excited about just a month earlier. This cycle leaves us feeling like a failure as we go back to our old habits and the thought of “I will try again next year.”
I am hear to tell you that you do not need a New Year’s resolution to change your health. Last year around this time I was struggling a little bit trying to find the balance between being a new mom and not losing sight of my own health and fitness habits. I wrote and shared, The only Health and Fitness New Year’s Resolution Worth Making, to show people that you don’t have to make drastic changes in your life to make a positive change. If you haven’t read it or could use a refresher, give it a read.
If you are a health resolution setter, I encourage you to not set a health related resolution this year. Instead, I challenge you to commit to making a positive change in your life. Committing to making a positive change in your life will take off the pressure for us to lose a specific amount of weight by a certain time. Instead of focusing on a number on the scale, we will be focused on creating healthy habits that we will be able to sustain as the year goes on. Before you know it, you will be becoming a healthier happier you without having to attempt to make unsustainable changes that will most likely lead to failure.
Ready to make a positive change in your life and become a healthier happier you in 2020? I have some helpful tips for you to get started.
- Set a realistic goal with realistic expectations. Set a goal that you know you can reach and understand that life happens and that there will be plateaus and setbacks.
- Be ready, willing and able to make a change. If you aren’t ready physically or mentally it will be February and you will be back to your old habits. You have to be willing to make a change and embrace new challenges. Most importantly, you have to be able to make this positive change. If there is a hurtle in your life that isn’t going to allow for this change right now, that is okay. Once you overcome that hurtle and are able, that is when you should make the change.
- Have a support system. Rally some girlfriends or family to do this together and hold each other accountable.
- Always be learning. Never stop learning about your body and what makes it feel its best.
- Make small changes. Make one small change at a time. This will allow you to make that change a habit which means you will be more likely to stick with it. Once you feel confident with one small change, start working on another small change.
- If you mess up, brush yourself off and keep going. Change is not linear and this process won’t be either. There will be ups and downs and twists and turns. Failing is part of the process.
